Every year, Prime Contractors and Subcontractors in the state of Alabama must submit a Contractor Renewal Form. The process beings each year in March and the renewals have very specific timing and rules.
Contractor Renewal Dates
Renewal dates remain unchanged from past years. The deadline for your company is determined by using the alphabet letter that your company name begins with.
- I, J, K, L are due in March;
- M, N are due in April;
- O, P, Q, R are due in May
- S is due in June;
- T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z are due in July;
- G, H are are due in August;
- D, E, F are due in September;
- C is due in October;
- B is due in November;
- A is due in December.

Each Prime Contractor must pay a renewal fee of $200 and each Subcontractor must pay a fee of $100. Please see the schedule to determine when your license may be due. You should not send in your renewal too early because if you send it in more than 45 days before it’s due, it can be returned without being processed.
What You Will Provide for an Alabama Contractor's License
Completing the submission process can be time consuming, especially for Prime Contractors, which have to provide more information. Here is an overview of what you can expect to provide:
- A current “print screen” of your organization from the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office.
- A copy of your Alabama Certification Cards from the corresponding state Alabama State Board (example E-Electrical card; M – Mechanical must have a plumbers and heating and air card.) Local cards are not accepted, only state cards.
- The completed Renewal Form, which will include proof of citizenship in the form of a valid and unexpired Alabama driver’s license or other Alabama nondriver identification card, and entity information including ownership information.
- The payment. You are required to pay your fee with a money order or cashier’s check. Cash, credit card, personal checks and company checks are not accepted.
- The Prime Contractor application is more intensive to complete and also requires you to submit current financial statement (no more than one year old).
If you fail to renew your license(s), you will be required to submit a new application and take the trade examination(s) and the business and law examination.
