TaxCaddy is a secure online portal where clients can view a list of what documents their accountant needs, easily upload tax documents (or any sensitive information) and send messages with questions directly to their tax professional. TaxCaddy debuted in 2011 and Avizo was an early user, so many of our clients are familiar with the software and its offerings.

In the 2024 tax season, our clients had to upload documents themselves to their TaxCaddy portal. However, with TaxCaddy’s reintroduction of SmartLinks, sharing your tax information through TaxCaddy can be even easier in the 2025 tax year!

What is SmartLinks?

SmartLinks is a unique feature that allows taxpayers to directly connect their accounts to TaxCaddy so that it can pull in necessary documents automatically. For instance, if you have a brokerage statement, instead of waiting for it to come in the mail or getting an alert to download it, you can connect your brokerage account and TaxCaddy will “sweep” the account to gather the 1099 as it is uploaded.  This feature was tested in the early stages of the platform, but removed when the software transitioned ownership. Now, it will be returning in August of 2025 to make gathering documents even easier.

If you used SmartLinks prior to the May 2024 interruption, you will need to re-establish your connections. However, there are some new features that were previously unavailable with this relaunch of the program.

New SmartLink Features

More Financial Institution

TaxCaddy has updated their list of financial institutions (banks and brokerage firms) to include more options for institutions that can link into your account. If your previous insitutition didn’t link, there is a good chance it will now.

Payroll

With the reintroduction of this feature, Smart Links can now collect documents like W-2s directly from your payroll institution as well. For instance, if your employer uses Gusto, you can link to your Gusto account, and it will grab your W-2 or any 1099s.

Security

TaxCaddy maintains robust security measures, and they increased security this year by partnering with MeasureOne. MeasureOne is a data infrastructure company that utilizes a Consumer-Permissioned Data approach to deliver only the required data on your behalf. So, you can rest assured that your information is secure and handled with the utmost care if you choose to use SmartLinks.

Common Q&A From TaxCaddy

Yes, Smart Links will disconnect if your password is changed and will need re-establishing.

TaxCaddy will notify you via a toast message, then you can fix or remove the link accordingly.

Institutions with frequent two-factor authentication challenges may block automatic retrieval. It is recommended to authorize the “device” periodically.

We recommend doing this mid to late February to ensure all your tax information is available and ready to upload.

Using Smart Links

The Smart Links feature is entirely optional and available to those who want to use it as a time-saving step. If you choose to not use Smart Links, the difference is that you will wait for the document to come in the mail or for it to be uploaded to your account. If you receive it as a physical document in the mail, you’ll need to scan it in to your computer and upload it into TaxCaddy or take photos of each page. If you receive it digitally, you have to download to your computer and then upload it into TaxCaddy.
